Ep.15 Seth Pimentel

SETH PIMENTEL

B. 1995 - Johannesburg, South Africa. Seth Pimentel is an illustrator, painter and experimental visual artist who currently lives and works in Johannesburg.  Pimentel focuses on pushing the boundaries of contemporary portraiture by merging painting, digital illustration and drawing into a hybrid of experimentation. Continuously developing his style and approach towards addressing themes of identity, mental illness and modern life in the digital age, he uses his practice to highlight his lived experiences in post-colonial South Africa.

Pimentel channels all of his energy and emotion into newer, bigger bodies of traditional and digital pieces and has collaborated with numerous brands and artists from South Africa and around the world such as Netflix, Converse, Red Bull, SneakerLab, Jameson and Adobe. Recent Exhibition:

Sisyphus’s Smoke break.

The entire premise of the show is an absurdist realization of life. To deconstruct the art of creation through the idea of repetition, and the impact said repetition has on one’s psyche. Especially in the context of art and what defines  the artistic purpose.  Referencing the mythological tale of King Sisyphus and his eternal damnation, the artistic practice is a ritualistic, cyclical process that has varied impacts on the human psyche. Like Sisyphus, we are caught in an eternal battle of  trying to reach a height within our creation, or our careers, or relationships only for us to start the journey all over again. Cyclical.

The premise of the show is a way to deconstruct Albert Camus’s quote “One must imagine Sisyphus Happy” in our journey in self-discovery and creative exploration through rituals. By trying to dismantle these existential issues and find a sense of meaning and bliss in them.
