Ep.38 Fezeka Jacqueline Mophethe (Market Photo Workshop)
Fezeka Jacqueline Mophethe: Photographer, Visual Artist: Photo Incubator 9 participant.
Fezeka Jacqueline Mophethe is a 25-year-old visual artist from Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, who specializes in photography. Her photography journey began with capturing self-portraits and everyday surroundings using her cellphone. In 2018, her passion for photography blossomed when her mother gifted her a camera.
Drawing inspiration from renowned photographers such as Carrie Mae Weems, Cindy Sherman, and Vivian Maier, Mophethe developed a keen interest in self-portraiture. This artistic exploration led her to create a powerful body of work titled UBHUHLE BAM
(my beauty), which addresses the personal experiences of teenage insecurities about her skin.
Showcased at the first East Rand CLASH OF THE MEDIUMS group exhibition in 2019, Mophethe's work gained recognition and opened doors to participate in several other group exhibitions. These include the IHIYA and She Bad Bad in 2021, followed by
Working the Land in 2022. With a growing passion for exhibition curation, Mophethe has lent her expertise to assist in various exhibitions.
In 2022, she co-curated a group archival exhibition named Living Legacy with Dianah Chiyangwa, under the mentorship of Refilwe Nkomo. As Fezeka Jacqueline Mophethe continues to evolve in her artistic journey, her unique perspective and artistic contributions significantly enrich South Africa's contemporary art landscape.
